Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler to Crown Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Winner

Posted on February 9, 2014 | 8:13 PM

Miss Universe 2013 Maria Gabriela Isler of Venezuela is Manila-bound this March to crown this year's Bb. Pilipinas-Universe winner (Miss Universe-Philippines 2014) who will compete in the Miss Universe pageant later in the year.

The news was confirmed to the Philippine Star (Funfare Update) by the head of Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. (BPCI) Madame Stella Marquez de Araneta.

The grand coronation night of Bb. Pilipinas 2014 will be held on March 30 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Forty candidates will vie for the four crowns at stake—Miss Universe-Philippines 2014, Bb. Pilipinas-International 2014, Bb.Pilipinas-Tourism 2014 and Bb. Pilipinas-Supranational 2014.

The visit of the reigning Miss Universe to the Philippines is a good sign that the country is having a good relationship with the Miss Universe Organization. Last year, Ariella Arida finished third runner up, sealing the country's four consecutive placements in the Miss Universe top 5.

With the country producing several winners and runners up in the worldwide pageant arena recently, there is no doubt that the whole world will be anticipating the crowning of our new queens.

The 51st edition of Bb. Pilipinas will be a historical one as three international queens will be present to crown the local pageant winners. Aside from Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler, Miss International 2013 Bea Rose Santiago and Miss Supranational 2013 Mutya Johanna Datul will also be crowning their local successors.

It seems that 2014 is another good year for the Philippines in terms of pageantry as reports circulating suggested the staging of Miss World 2014 pageant in the country for the first time. The current Miss World, Megan Young is also from the Philippines.

Coco Martin, Megan Young, Cory Vidanes Among 2013's 'People of the Year' Awardees

Posted on January 23, 2014 | 7:08 PM

ABS-CBN Broadcast Head Cory Vidanes was among the 14 personalities recognized by People Asia magazine in its annual “People of the Year” for her vital role in the achievements of the country’s largest media conglomerate over the past years, particularly her involvement and passionate support for the network’s public service campaigns.

Coco Martin and ABS-CBN Boradcast Head Cory Vidanes

“Servicing the Filipino people— that’s what we’re really here for. Our work is tough. There is so much stress, sacrifices, and sleepless nights. But at the end of the day, what keeps us going is the mission to reach out to Pinoys all over the world,” said Vidanes in the article.

In its 14th anniversary issue, People Asia highlighted how Vidanes can work quietly on the sidelines and achieve greatness without calling much attention to it.

Aside from spearheading campaigns that further increased ABS-CBN’s ratings, Vidanes has been very much involved in the network’s public service projects that include the network’s recent “Tulong Na, Tabang Na, Tayo Na” campaign for the victims of super typhoon Yolanda.

“I feel that I was put in this place by God because this is my purpose. If I can touch, empower or inspire the Filipino in any way I can, then I will always stay in ABS-CBN,” she added.

Other ABS-CBN personalities included on the list were actor Coco Martin, who was recognized for his contribution to Philippine television and cinema, and Miss World 2013 Megan Young, for being the first Filipina to win the much-coveted title after 62 years and for her embodiment of the pageant’s credo ‘beauty with a purpose.’

In 2010, ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio was also among the “People of the Year” awardees for being the first female president of the country’s leading media corporation.

People Asia began the ‘People of the Year’ awards back in 2004. It aims to recognize world-class Filipinos who have made the country proud with their achievements, advocacies, and notable contributions to the Filipino society.

The beauty kings and queens of the year 2013 from the PhilippinesThe year 2013 has been a very successful one for the Philippines in the field of beauty pageants and now considered the best year the country has ever had in terms of pageantry. Without any doubt, the Philippines is country of the year when it comes to beauty competitions.

This year, our representatives to both male and female pageants did very well, bringing home five crowns, six runner-up trophies, and two semifinals honors in major pageants as well as in a handful of other pageants overseas. A history was also made this year as the Philippines became the first and only country in the world to have won all six major titles—Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss Earth, Miss International, Miss Supranational and Miss Tourism Queen International.
Here's a run-down of the beauty kings and queens that made the Philippines proud in 2013:

Megan Young

1. Megan Young, winner, 63rd Miss World
Megan made history as the very first Filipina to win the Miss World crown which has been elusive to a Filipina for the past six decades. Megan, who is the favorite to win the title, bested over 120 delegates all over the world at the 63rd edition of the pageant held on September 28 in Bali, Indonesia.

Bea Rose Santiago

2. Bea Rose Santiago, winner, 53rd Miss International
Bea Rose is the fifth Filipina to win the title of Miss International. The Pinay beauty from Masbate beat 66 others in the finals held on December 17 in Tokyo, Japan. Bea’s success in Miss International finally sealed the Philippines’ status as country of the year 2013 in world pageantry.

Mutya Datul

3. Mutya Datul, winner, 5th Miss Supranational
Mutya started the country’s winning streak in international pageants this year with her victory in the Miss Supranational pageant held on September 6 in Minsk, Belarus. According to reports, the children in the orphanage, who were having their class in the second floor of a temporary building, rushed to Megan. As they came forward, the floor collapsed. Miraculously all the other children and Miss World Megan Young escaped either unhurt or with just cuts and bruises. However, Julia Morley and one of the children named Jonathan suffered fractures after falling through the floor.

"We went into the orphanage hoping for a good day. I was happy that day and the children we were with seemed so full of energy and joy. We get onto this second floor platform, and we aren't even there for a minute and we hear a crack and everybody falls through," recounted Miss World 2013 Megan Young.

X-Ray findings revealed that Julia had suffered a significant fracture high in her hip area and that Jonathan had suffered a leg fracture. Julia Morley was airlifted to Miami overnight and had undergone a 5 1/2 hour surgery to put her hip back together.

Jonathan is now recuperating after suffering fracture. Meanwhile, Julia Morley is staying at the Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami and will undergo therapy before going back to work.

"I will return to Haiti as soon as I am well enough. There is a lot of work still to do. I want to go back and see the kids and to check on Jonathan's progress. This terrible accident highlights the continued need to provide a safe environment for these young kids. Many of them were themselves orphaned as a result of buildings collapsing during the terrible earthquake of 2010," said Morley.
