Robin Padilla Opposes Proposed Lifetime Tax Exemption for Manny Pacquiao

Posted on January 7, 2014 | 7:17 PM

Actor Robin Padilla calls the proposed bill that would give People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao a lifetime tax exemption as unjust in “Tapatan Ni Tunying” this Thursday (January 9).

“If he gets a tax exemption, I’ll complain. Probably you and many people, mostly the poor ones, will protest too,” Robin says.

Robin Padilla Opposes Proposed Lifetime Tax Exemption for Manny Pacquiao

Robin is referring to Velenzuela Rep. Magtanggol Gunigundo’s proposed tax exemption bill for Pacquiao for making Filipinos proud in the field of boxing, following his controversial P2.2 billion tax evasion case. The actor also said that the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) would not have filed a case against him without basis.

“The BIR would have not sued our ‘Pambansang Kamao,’ our hero, for no reason. With that, Manny has the right to defend himself, but he must never have a tax exemption,” he explains.

Moreover, Robin encourages Filipinos to pay their taxes. Robin says that he fully recognized the importance of settling tax debts after being freed from prison in 1998.

“When I got out from the Bilibid, the Lord blessed me with the right persons to be with, who taught me to prioritize my taxes,” he shares.

Aside from expressing his bold political views, the action star also opens up about his 30-year career in showbiz, as well as his life as a son, a husband, and a father of six.

ABS-CBN KampanyaSerye Presents Pacquiao-an (Pakyawan) in Politics

Posted on February 23, 2013 | 3:52 PM

People’s Champ Manny Pacquiao has conquered the boxing ring. Today, he is out to conquer the Philippine political arena in a campaign that could usher in a new dynasty in SOCCSKSARGEN.

After absorbing a TKO loss to Rep. Darlene Antonino-Custodio in 2007 for the right to represent the first district of South Cotabato, Pacquiao staged a comeback through the backdoor in a manner of speaking.

ABS-CBN KampanyaSerye Presents Paquiao-an (Pakyawan) in Politics

He ran for Congress in 2010 and won, not in South Cotabato, but in Saranggani province, the hometown of his wife Jinkee. Pacquiao is running for reelection in 2013 unopposed.

But Saranggani is too small a kingdom for the widely popular, considerably influential, extremely wealthy and very ambitious boxer.

His eyes set on capturing the Senate in 2016 and perhaps the presidency in 2022, Pacquiao has started to build his mass base outside his jurisdiction but within his region.

He is fielding his wife Jinkee to run for vice governor of Saranggani, whose running mate, Vice Gov. Steve Chiongbian-Solon of the politically entrenched and monied Chiongbian clan which the boxing champion crushed in the 2010 elections.

Aside from Jinkee, Pacquiao’s brother Rogelio, a barangay captain in one of the villages in General Santos City, will run for Congress as representative of South Cotabato against incumbent Rep. Pedro Acharon Jr., a former mayor of GeneralSantosCity and ally of the Antoninos. (An in-law of Pacquiao is also a barangay captain in General Santos).

Pacquiao’s conqueror, Darlene Antonino-Custodio will run for re-election as GeneralSantosCity mayor. She will be up against first councilor Ronnel Rivera, son of a fishing magnate and Pacquiao’s handpicked candidate. Team Pacquiao in General Santos is composed of political rivals of the Antoninos.

Clearly the 2013 elections will be a showdown, some say a proxy war, between Pacquiao and the Antoninos. It is expected to be a very expensive political exercise — a battle between old money (Antoninos and the Acharons) and new money (Pacquiao and Riveras et al) — with the resource-rich Soccsksargen as the prize.

Will Pacquiao succeed in building his own dynasty and pave the way for his journey to the Senate and perhaps Malacanang?

Broadcast journalist Jorge Carino investiages “Pakyawan” in politics in next week’s “KampanyaSerye,” a teleserye-like documentary that tackles and probes the stories behind campaign promises and rhetorics to bring out the issues that matter to the electorate and show the competencies of aspiring leaders.

It is part of ABS-CBN’s Halalan 2013 coverage that was launched one year before the May national elections and aims to educate voters who are set to elect a new batch of leaders.

Watch Jorge’s five-part report in ”TV Patrol” next week.

Broadcast journalist Atom Araullo traces the story of Dionisia Pacquiao, mother of renowned Pinoy boxer Manny Pacquiao, and gets to know the mysteries behind her strong faith in Jesus and the Virgin Mary this Friday (Feb 1) in “Pinoy True Stories: Hiwaga.”

Mommy Dionisia Pacquiao Reveals Encounter with Mam Mary in 'Hiwaga' this February 1

Though many know that Mommy D is a devotee, her faith is not something she has formed overnight because when Manny was a child, she claimed that she had seen an apparition of the Holy Mother. She was diagnosed with leukemia then but after this encounter, her illness suddenly disappeared.

But the story doesn’t end there because years later, she was afflicted with an inexplicable disease which made her sleepless and bloated. Would her faith give in to this test? Or would it make her stronger?

Nonito Donaire is Ring Magazine's 2012 'Fighter of the Year'

Posted on December 31, 2012 | 10:12 PM

Four-division world champion Nonito Donaire Jr. is voted as The RING Magazine’s 2012 Fighter of the  Year. The Filipino Flash's impressive wins this year sealed for him one of boxing's most-coveted titles.

The award is another feather to Nonito Donaire's cap as he was also hailed ESPN's "Boxer of the Year" a few days ago.

Nonito Donaire is Ring Magazine's 2012 'Fighter of the Year'

Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 knockouts) garnered 55.2% of the votes in RingTV.com's year-end poll to capture a landslide win over closest competitor to the title, Juan Manuel Marquez, who received only 27.3% of the votes.

Ring Magazine editor Doug Fischer said that Marquez may have scored the Knockout of the Year in the Fight of the Year by icing his arch rival Manny Pacquiao in the sixth round, but fight fans recognized Donaire accomplishing more than the Mexican legend inside and outside the ring.

Among those elite fighters – those precious few who fans and boxing media view as the pound-for-pound best, seldom fight more than twice a year – Donaire was the busiest this year.

"The 30-year-old veteran fought four times in 2012 and in the process of doing so the former flyweight and bantamweight titleholder established himself as the best 122-pound fighter on the planet, as well as the Fighter of the Year in the eyes of the fans who took part in RingTV.com’s year-end awards poll," Fischer reported.

Just like ESPN's Dan Rafael, Fischer also commended Donaire for being the only high-profile professional boxer who is willing to commit to comprehensive year-round drug testing conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA).

Nonito Donaire Hailed ESPN "Boxer of the Year"

Posted on December 26, 2012 | 7:24 PM

The Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire Jr. was hailed as the 2012 "Boxer of the Year" by ESPN.com. The "Boxer of the Year" title was previously held by Andre Ward and has been won three times by People's Champ Manny Pacquiao (2006, 2008 and 2009).

Nonito Donaire is ESPN's Boxer of the Year

"It might sound strange, but no, Manny Pacquiao was not the best fighter from the Philippines in 2012,” wrote ESPN’s Dan Rafael. "That honor goes to 'The Filipino Flash,' junior featherweight titlist Nonito Donaire, who had a year for the ages."

Rafael said that Donaire has been an easy pick as ESPN's 2012 "Boxer of the Year," having won with great fashion four of his fights this year.

In February, "The Filipino Flash" moved up to the 122-pound division and captured the vacant WBO super bantamweight title by beating Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. by split decision at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

In July, Donaire knocked off the IBF belt holder, Jeffrey Mathebula at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, the same venue when he stopped Japanese Toshiaki Nishioka via a round 9 TKO in October, successfully defending his IBF and WBO super bantamweight belts.

Nonito Donaire put an exclamation point to his credentials this year after knocking out Jorge Arce in third round in their December 15 fight at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Nonito Donaire was also commended for being the first and only boxer in the world to undergo random drug testing with the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on a year-round basis.

Donaire edged out Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez (who floored Pacquiao a week before Donaire knocked out Arce) as "Boxer of the Year." Nonito also beat other contenders for the award which include fellow Pinoy Brian Villoria, Danny Garcia, Robert Guerrero, Leo Santa Cruz, Andre Ward and Carl Froch.

Mayweather Jr. Wishes Pacquiao Well, Hopes Pacman Can Bounce Back

Posted on December 11, 2012 | 12:18 PM

Floyd Mayweather Jr, deemed as Manny Pacquiao's erstwhile rival offered words of encouragement for the Filipino Champ who suffered a 6th round knockout loss from Juan Manuel Marquez last December 8 (December 9, PHL time).

Erstwhile rival: Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao

In an interview with Ben Thompson for boxing website FightHype.com, Mayweather praised both Pacquiao and Marquez  and wished the former well after that stunning knockout.

"Marquez is a true champion. Manny Pacquiao is a true champion. Both of them went out there and put on a good performance, and that's a good thing for the sport of boxing," Mayweather said. "I wish Pacquiao nothing but the best. I wish he can bounce back and he can recoup from this….You have to really, really dedicate yourself to your craft. I think he's got so many different things on the outside that he worries about, you know. But it was a good thing that he was able to come into the sport, you know, piggyback off my name, and get a bunch of endorsement deals and make a good living. That's a great thing."

Mayweather, who admittedly felt bad for Pacquiao's loss gave the 8-division world champion pieces of advice before the epic battle between him and Manny can ever come into fruition.

"Pacquiao's focus should be trying to take a vacation, get his mind right, and get a few tune-up fights so he can bounce back. I'm not here to talk bad about Pacquiao. I feel bad for him, honestly….There's a difference in the ways you can get knocked out. When you gotta wake a guy up with smelling salts and he got a concussion and he gotta go to the hospital over night, that's crucial. I mean, that's close to the death."

"Hopefully he's [Pacquiao] okay. My prayers go out to the Pacquiao family. I know he loves the sport of boxing, so hopefully he can bounce back," the pound-for-pound and undefeated champion added.

Justin Bieber Makes Fun of Manny Pacquiao, Instagram Photos Go Viral

Justin Bieber Makes Fun of Manny Pacquiao, Instagram Photos Go ViralCanadian popstar Justin Bieber became the subject of online hate among Pacquiao fans and disappointment from Pinoys after he posted a series of photos on Instagram making fun of Pacquiao's knock out loss with Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez.

Last December 8, Manny Pacquiao suffered a 6th round knockout from Marquez in Las Vegas and as Filipinos grieve his loss, many other make fun of it and posted several memes on social networking sites mocking the knockout moment of Pacquiao (those what they call Mannying and Pacquiaoing). However, Justin Bieber's posts have been more viral.

Bieber posted three photos on his Instagram account, one showing Marquez's knock down moment from Mayweather during their fight in 2009 captioned "Look what Mayweather did to Marquez.. #moneyteam #nocompetition."

Marquez vs Mayweather knock down

Two other photos showed Pacquiao's knockout moment from Marquez, one pasted on the photo of the late Michael Jackson performing on stage with his signature move and the other one with a Simba icon waking up the motionless Pacquiao. The photos caption read: "Pacquiao doing the lean with MJ .. Classic moment" and "Dad wake up."

Justin Bieber, who is known to be a proud supporter of American boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. also commented on the idea of a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout, an exact opposite of what he tweeted years ago when Pacquiao defeated Margarito and he supporting the idea of Pacquiao vs Mayweather as an epic battle.

“He has nothing to gain fighting pacqiao, Floyd has never in his professional career lost a fight and Pacqiao lost his last two fights. If Floyd wins its not that big of a deal Cuz it would be his third loss in a row, and lf he loses he's gonna ruin his legacy either way there's no big win for Mayweather.. Mayweather is boxing.”

Pacquiao, however, is not considering retirement soon, as he said that he will take a rest for a few months and will go back to training in preparation for another fight.

Will Marquez be amenable to a fifth battle with Pacquiao?

In a post-fight interview, Manny said that if Marquez's camp will give them a chance, he will fight the Mexican again.

"Yes, why not?" he said when asked if he wanted to fight Marquez again. "It’s a good fight. I just got confident on that fight because I thought I got him," added the humble Pacquiao.

Pacquiao's promoter, Bob Arum was also in for a fifth fight between the two fighters. "Why not? People love this action." said Arum. "This fight will go down in history as a ring classic. If they wanna fight again, why not?"

Pacquiao admitted that Marquez is such a tough fighter.

"He’s not an easy opponent, he’s a tough fighter. I did my best but you know, that’s boxing, that’s sports," said the Filipino fighter who suffered his first ever knock out loss since 1999.

"I just didn’t see his punches… I never expected that punch," telling everyone that he was caught unguarded by Marquez with that knock out punch.

The phenomenal knockout win by Marquez which stunned millions of boxing fans was regarded as a defining moment in Marquez's boxing career. Needless to say, it might elevate Juan Manuel Marquez to a legendary status, something Pacquiao has achieved past in his career.

Will Marquez be amenable to a fifth fight with Pacquiao now that he has proven to all that he can beat him down the canvass?

WBO Says Manny Pacquiao Won Over Timothy Bradley

Posted on June 21, 2012 | 12:47 PM

People's Champ and world boxing icon Manny Pacquiao won over Timothy Bradley in their World Boxing Organization welterweight bout last June 9 (June 10 in Manila) according to a five-man panel of the WBO.

Pacquiao Wins over Bradley says WBO

The World Boxing Organization assigned a five-man panel to re-score the controversial Pacquiao-Bradley fight which gave Bradley a split-decision win over Pacquiao. After watching the Pacquiao-Bradley fight replay, all the five judges scored unanimously in favor of Manny Pacquiao and had it 118-110, 117-111, 117-111, 116-112, 115-113.

Although WBO had clearly seen Pacquiao's victory over Bradley, its president Francisco 'Paco' Valcarcel said that they can't change the fight’s official result. At any rate, the belt will have to stay with Bradley.

“We can’t change the result but we did this review for two reasons,” Valcarcel told ESPN.com. “If they want to make a rematch, we will approve the rematch and if they don’t we will order one. Also, we wanted to show (the Nevada State Athletic Commission) that they could bring in other officials from outside of Nevada who can also do a fine job judging fights. It’s good to have different officials.”

Pacquiao and Bradley are scheduled for a rematch on November 10.

The five judges who re-scored the Pacquiao-Bradley fight were from New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Pennsylvania and Puerto Rico. Armed with the information, WBO President Paco Valcarcel will submit to the Assn. of Boxing Commissions by its July meeting a request that state commissions such as Nevada's work more diligently to bring in judges from outside their states for fights of the magnitude of a world title contest.

Psychic Predicts Pacquiao's Loss Over Bradley, Number 7 a Curse to Pacman

Posted on June 10, 2012 | 5:53 PM

Manny Pacquiao's loss over Timothy Bradley on June 9 (June 10 in Manila) at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada was rightfully predicted by Joseph Greenfield, resident psychic of Bandera based on numerology.

Pacquiao's Loss Over Bradley Rightfully Predicted by Psychic Joseph Greenfield via numerology

The psychic pointed out number 7 as a curse to Pacman and other famous and rich personalities. The said number, deemed as Pacquiao's weakness has something to do with him losing the boxing belt to Bradley.

According to the psychic, Manny Pacquiao will lose every after the 15th cycle of his career, meaning the 16th time that he step into the boxing ring, he will lose the fight.

Manny first tasted defeat on February 9, 1996 after he lost to fellow Filipino Rustico Torrecampo in Mandaluyong. After this, he continued to win 15 succeeding fights and on the 16th time, he lost again to Thailander Medgoen Singsurat in a fight held at the latter's home country on September 17, 1999. He again went on to his 15-cycle win before losing the battle again to Erik Morales on March 19, 2005 at Las Vegas.

On June 9, 2012, Pacquiao faced Timothy Bradley only to lose his WBO Welterweight belt. That is after 15 straight wins since Erik Morales defeated him in 2005.

According to the psychic Joseph Greenfield, summing up all the numbers in the dates when Pacquiao lost inside the ring will result to number 7. He also noted that everytime Pacman went on his 16th fight after successive wins, he faced defeat. When we add 1 + 6, this gives us 7.

What an interesting analysis! To learn more about how the psychic came up with the numbers, read his article on Bandera posted June 9 (Manila time), a day before the Pacquiao-Bradley fight.

Mommy Dionisia Pacquiao Fainted After Hearing Manny Pacquiao's Loss to Bradley

Pac-Mom, Mommy Dionesia Pacquiao fainted after she heard the news that son People's Champ Manny Pacquiao lost via split decision to Timothy Bradley.

Mommy D, as she was fondly called watched the fight in the US only once (but not inside the arena) and she 's always at home praying for his son's win.

Mommy Dionisia fainted after hearing Manny Pacquiao's lost to Bradley

Mommy Dionisia Pacquiao has asked Manny Pacquiao to retire from boxing but Manny would always want to fight for the country. His loss to Timothy Bradley might be a step for him to retire but we all know that a rematch is always the option, what with the boos and upset fans. In fact, Mommy D now wanted a Pacman and 'Desert Storm' Bradley rematch.

Pacquiao and Bradley's rematch, slated in November, will be another big boxing event to watch out for.

Anyway, Pacquiao is already a boxing superstar no matter what. The only boxer in history with 8 world championships under his belt, he is still the world's best fighter.

Timothy Bradley Wins Over Manny Pacquiao via Split Decision

People's Champ Manny Pacquiao bowed to Timothy Bradley who won via a split decision (115-113 Pacquiao, 115-113, 115-113 Bradley) for the WBO World Welterweight Belt, June 9 (June 10 in Manila) at the MGM Grand Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Timothy Bradley Won Over Manny Pacquiao via Split Decision

Manny Pacquiao dominated the first half of the 12 rounds but later in the fight, Timothy Bradley showed his power throwing punches to Pacquiao. Based on ringside punch stats, it was Pacquiao who threw in more punches and the harder ones but those came in short for the Filipino warrior.

Timothy Bradley walked out of the arena with a clean record ending Manny Pacquiao's 15-fight winning streak in 7 years. The controversial decision was roundly booed by the crowd.

Bradley was feeling confident after the whole 12 rounds of boxing, saying that he did not feel Pacquiao's power punches.

"I thought I won the fight," Bradley said. "I didn't think he was as good as everyone says he was. I didn't feel his power."

Meanwhile, Pacquaio turned on the popular song Just Once when asked about the results. He claimed , though that he was never hurt by Bradley's punches, which mostly landed on his arms.

"I did my best," Pacquiao said. "I guess my best wasn't good enough."

Top Rank's Bob Arum, who has contracts with both Pacquiao and Bradley said that there would be a rematch, though he criticized the judging. The possibility that Pacquiao and Bradley will box it all out again in November is now at large.

"I'm going to make a lot of money on the rematch, but this was outrageous," Arum said.

Other show highlights include the singing of the US national anthem by American Idol runner-up Jessica Sanchez and the celebration of Bradley's camp with his wife hugging the manager and beaming with joy.

What do you think of the results? Feel free to comment below.
